He’s been ready for this since before high school graduation – actually since he received his acceptance letter. My son is finally going off to college in a matter of days, a little over two weeks. His classes are scheduled, he’s been to campus to ‘walk his schedule’ – all that’s left is to start going to class, which he started today!
Like any other student on the first day, it was ‘fine’ and not much more. He did have stories about meeting new people, liking his professors, but being frustrated with a couple of the ‘basic’ classes he was placed in. Math is boring because it’s stuff he learned at his more accelerated private high school. Another class about critical thinking and other skills needed in the college classroom is also boring because, once again, it’s something he was exposed to constantly throughout his K-12 schooling. After an initial bump with his laptop malfunctioning, he’s switched to the iPad he’s used throughout high school that he was able to take away with him. Such a lifesaver! And now it’s his primary device during classes.
But as the week went on, he began to enjoy his classes more. He’s met students who have come long distances and are a little homesick – and reached out to them to comfort and make them laugh. Since he’s not living on campus, his biggest gripe is the traffic to and from school.
He has found his element. While he’s never struggled socially much in school, he has had his ups and downs academically. I don’t think this will be the case any longer. He enjoys class, enjoys what he’s learning, and comes home every day and dives right into homework with little need for help. He’s clicking with people older than him as well as those his age.
I wish him all the best as he learns and grows and truly sets his own path for the rest of his life. Oh, and his favorite thing: NO MORE UNIFORMS!!!!
If you went to college, what was your freshman year like? Did you find friends and activities to enjoy? Do you have friends you met you’re still in touch with today? Let’s talk on Facebook!

Hi everyone. My name is Scott Beaumont and I live in Glass and go to John Hedgecock University. I’m also a teacher’s assistant there this year. I don’t really know how all this blog stuff works, but I’ll try. I met Turner when he moved into the apartment complex where I live with my sister Melody. We became friends and work out together because we’re both swimmers with Olympic dreams in mind.
Things got a little weird when he left without much notice for a family vacation. I’m not mad, just wish I didn’t have to hear it from his aunt who also lives in the complex. She said it was very last-minute and Turner couldn’t get in touch before having to leave.
He’s actually a student in one of the classes I teach at JHU, so we’ve reconnected a little, but sloowly and not as personally. I can’t let our friendship get in the way of objective grading, you know. I don’t want to mistakenly pump up his grade because we’re friends.
Anyway, if you want to know more about me, I’ll be 21 soon and am a junior at JHU. My sister Melody and I live together in the apartment complex after some weird family stuff happened. She goes to Glass High School, where Turner also goes. He never said anything, but it’s easy to figure out he’s a senior in the dual enrollment program. I’m fine with that, age doesn’t make much of a difference to me when someone is as equally as motivated as I am.
Melody and I aren’t originally from Glass, but we moved here to live with our uncle Phineas after our parents passed away. It was him who died in those murders in the woods. He encouraged my swimming and other activities and was sort of like an older brother/father figure.
Turner has been acting weird whenever anything about the case comes up, but he admitted to knowing the kid who also died. I feel for him. Losing a friend at that young of an age is horrible. Losing anyone at any age is, but things like this are a special kind of horrible.
Wow. I thought this was going to be a more positive post than what it has turned into. Anyway, I have teacher’s aid stuff to do, and schoolwork of my own, so if you want to know more about me, I hear this is an author’s blog about the incident. There will probably be some cool stuff to read about.

While I waited for edits to my debut to come back, I started a new project. It’s a different genre, and what I feel is an interesting story. It started out as a fun short story about a friend to give to them privately, but the project has taken on a new life. It has acutally become novel length, and worthy of a series.
I’ve finished the first draft of the first story, and am doing a first editing pass. After that, I plan to give it to him to read, and if he approves, I’ll have another series on my hands! I’ll be keeping you all updated here as the situation evolves: big things may be on the horizon!

We’ve made a big life decision. We’re moving! And moving back to where we spent 16 years before we arrived in our current location in Michigan. After some major thought and planning, the move will be happening very soon – within the next couple weeks, before my son starts college.
We’ve been talking about it since before he graduated high school, but things really only came together in the last month or so. We’re still debating how to get there (drive or fly, each has pros and cons), but it will be a trek no matter what. I can’t say much more at the moment, but know the blog will continue weekly as usual through the month and into the future.
Have you ever planned a big move? How far did you move? What did you choose to bring with you? Let’s talk on Facebook!
