I Have an Adult

I don’t talk about him much here, and when I do I try not to use his name, because I respect his privacy. Eighteen years ago today, my life got bigger, fuller, and happier. My son was born. There are bad days and good days. I choose not to focus on the bad, but on the good. He’s grown into such a wonderful and caring young man. While some young people just go through the motions and activities of becoming an Eagle Scout, my son truly lives those values every day.

He has found some true passions in life. While some may scorn his ‘addiction’ to video games, tech, and YouTube like any other Zoomer, it seems as though it is becoming his path in life. He recently got accepted to a prestigious tech college with the aim of becoming a game designer. He has achieved so much in his short 18 years, it blows my mind sometimes.

Throughout his years, he’s been mistaken for both older than his age – he’s very mature when compared to some of his peers – to younger than his age, because he’s always been a small guy and is only a bit taller than my 5’8”. He’s grown in so many other ways, and it’s how he has become a “stand up guy” as many of the kids at his school say.

Not only is it his 18th birthday, but it’s his Golden Birthday. It’s nothing special other than turning 18 on the 18th.

Happy 18th Birthday my golden boy!

Character Takeover: Detective Ellison

Character Takeover: Detective Ellison

Writing reports is part of my job, writing blog posts – not so much. I can’t even talk about this case much, since it’s still under investigation. I really don’t want to just give you my personal and professional profile though. You probably know some of it already.

I bet you’re thinking I’m just going to take out all my frustrations, worries, and concerns right here. I can’t even really talk about the case in general terms, or you’ll know who and what I’m talking about before you can even finish the book. The author won’t like that.

I don’t know why I’m here. Others involved in the case have told me I should, and that they’ve had fun and a little catharsis from doing it. It’s been their opportunity to get their side of the story told since the author isn’t always giving them the opportunity to tell their truth.

This is my case, and I’m the one looking for the truth. I’ve lined up the players and have been evaluating each until I’ve found no reason to suspect them any longer. I’ve been assigned to this case due to the unique witness involved. This witness is even more unique, given their age and attitude toward the case. This witness would rather be left alone, not pulled in to help, and it’s making things difficult. Without this witness around to help, I can’t do what needs doing, or verify certain things only the witness may be able to confirm.

I’m used to working with witnesses the exact opposite of this witness, and this witness is giving me a run for my money. It’s frustrating. And I wish I could talk about it depth more, because I know that’s the only way I’ll truly find peace and relaxation again.

By the way, my name is Ignatius Ellison, but you can call me Ellison or Ell. There are a select few people who call me Iggy, but I’m not a fan of that. Professionally, some people just refer to me as Detective. I’m okay with that. I’ve been with the Glass Police Department for about 20 years, working all sorts of cases, but specializing in those with child witnesses and/or victims. I was a child witness myself, and it’s been my way of giving back to those who helped me when I was young.

You can learn more about me, I think, in the book about me and my current case. I think it’s due out some time early next year. For now, just head to the author’s Facebook page where she’s been telling people more about what’s going on.

Beta Readers Follow Up

Beta Readers Follow Up

I’ve learned a lot over the past year. I’ve learned that yes, I can finish a novel. Yes, I can have it prepared and polished enough to present to others outside my closest circle of friends for reading. Not that it’s not scary to do so.

I always figured with my writing and editing skills, honed over more than 20 years, I wouldn’t need the help of beta readers. I could skip the step and send it straight to an editor. How much I was wrong. I took a little detour and rescheduled my release date in order to include this significant step. I have a severe case of Impostor Syndrome, and it’s very difficult to release my work out into the wild, so to speak.

But I held my breath and bit the bullet. I first went to my author Facebook page to see if any of my followers were ready to experience my work in full for the first time. I then went to my personal page. I got more hits on my personal page, with friends and family promising to read like readers and not like people who know me. I then turned to a Facebook writing group I’m part of. I got a couple more hits, and once I felt like I had a strong number and variety of opinions, I sent it off. Along with a list of questions I have for myself.

Well, responses have begun to roll in. One family member actually had it read and responded to within a week! I hoped they didn’t speed through it and offer little opinion, but I was wrong. She had intelligent feedback and questions. Others finished it just before the Thanksgiving holiday, and I received their responses at the beginning of December. I’m still waiting on a couple, as their very in-depth dissection of my story is taking a while to put into words, apparently. I’m not sure whether to be exited they have taken the job so seriously, or afraid they’ve ripped it to shreds. Either way, I have a feeling their feedback will be a big help.

Once everyone has emailed me their thoughts and opinions, it’ll be time to get down to business. I realize now there are plot holes to be filled, unresolved story lines, and more that I just can’t see as the writer who has lived with and in this story for more than a year.

Whatever the outcome, I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Have you ever asked someone for their detailed, unfiltered feedback? How’d that go? Were you devastated or encouraged to finish strong?

Let’s talk on Facebook!
