Where Did My Inspiration Go?

Where Did My Inspiration Go?
If you visit my Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/KBRWriting, you’ll notice my cover photo is a Calvin and Hobbes comic in which Hobbes asks “Do you have an idea for your story yet?”  Calvin then replies “No, I’m waiting for inspiration”, adding “You can’t just turn on creativity like a faucet.  You have to be in the right mood.”  I agree (which is why it’s my cover photo).  I seem to have been waiting for inspiration for a long time now – considering my last post was a week ago.

I try to follow the advice in some of my so-called “writing books.”  Those things are so subjective and usually written with an emphasis on the author’s writing style and habits.  The name several different methods, but seem to refute each method if it’s not the one they personally use.  They spend lots of time and space to describe their preferred way all the way down to the last detail.  But, as I’ve said before I’m me and you’re you – and they’re them and I’m me.  Meaning the same things don’t inspire or motivate us to write until the ink runs out or the computer memory crashes.  So here I am, waiting for the same inspiration Calvin is.  It may hit as soon as while writing this post, after I post it or another week from now.  I can’t say.

I by no means sit around and wait for it to hit.  Sometimes I take a nap, since those few minutes before I fall asleep tend to be the most creative.  My mind is drifting and forming and reforming thoughts.  Or I take a walk – a change of scenery works wonders sometimes.  It’s hard to stare at the same white wall all day every day, and the Arizona weather allows for such activities year round (though in the peak of summer it’s hard to bear the heat).  I constantly have a notebook and pen handy when I’m out and about, because, well, you never know.  You could be looking at produce at the grocery store and think of a funny conversation that might take place between a banana and orange.  Or see a funny vanity license plate.  Or…or…or.  You just never know.

Where did my inspiration go?  It’s dormant, for now, somewhere within me, just waiting to burst.
