Gay Irish Presidential Candidate Withdraws Amid Controversy

Senator and former presidential candidate David Norris has halted his campaign for the Irish presidency amid controversy. Letters that he wrote to Israeli authorities in 1997 seek clemency for his former same-sex partner recently surfaced. Norris helped Ezra Yitzhak Nawi seek clemency over statutory rape of a 15-year old boy. Norris claims he wrote the letters to support a friend and did not intend his message to seem as though he had no compassion for Nawi’s victim. Other letters have surfaced since, written to Israeli and other authorities. After those letters were revealed to campaign
staffers, many resigned.
