Dolch Words

Dolch Words

What the heck are those?  It’s a list of 220 “sight words” that anyone should know in order to become a good reader.  Additionally, there are 95 nouns that make up the most common words found in children’s literature at various levels.  My son’s kindergarten teacher talks about them every now and then, but I never made the connection between the phrase “sight words” and “Dolch words.”  These are the words a new reader needs to know just by looking at them, and often because they are irregular-sounding or “undecodable.”  These are, in my opinion, everyday words that we very fluent readers and writers just use without thinking.  In fact, I have used one of the words five times up until now.  I’ve used another one three times.  I’ve used another one just once and yet another just two times.  Can you guess which ones they are?
